Overview
The University of Calgary (U of C or UCalgary) is a vibrant public research university in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It got its start in 1944 as a branch of the University of Alberta, which had been around since 1908. By 1966, UCalgary became its own independent university. The campus, which is divided into a main campus near the Bow River in the northwest part of the city and a smaller south campus downtown, spans about 200 hectares (490 acres).
UCalgary is made up of 14 faculties and over 85 research institutes and centers. It’s part of the U15, a group of Canada’s top research universities. The school pulls in a hefty $380.4 million in sponsored research revenue, with total revenues topping $1.2 billion. The main campus is home to most of the research facilities and works closely with agencies like the Geological Survey of Canada.
The university has strong ties to the petroleum and geoscience industry through its Department of Geosciences and the Schulich School of Engineering. The University of Calgary's main campus, located about 10 kilometers northwest of downtown, spans 213 hectares (530 acres), making it larger than the city’s downtown area. The Health Sciences Campus, located south of the main campus and shared with the Foothills Medical Centre, started with the Health Sciences Building in 1972. It has since expanded to include the Heritage Medical Building, the Health Research Innovation Centre, and the Teaching, Research, and Wellness building. This campus hosts the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases and received federal funding to support COVID-19 vaccine communication among health professionals.
The Downtown Campus, opened in 2010 at 8th Avenue and 8th Street SW, offers a range of classes, including those from the Haskayne School of Business and the School of Public Policy. It features a conference center and additional study spaces for students and houses the University of Alberta’s MSc Physical Therapy – Calgary program.

The University of Calgary is a great place for Indian students. The professors are knowledgeable and supportive, and the courses are very practical. I enjoyed the diverse campus culture and found it easy to balance part-time work with my studies.
Studying at the University of Calgary was a wonderful experience. The faculty is approachable, and the programs are rigorous and hands-on. The vibrant student community and opportunities for part-time jobs made my time there both enjoyable and productive.
